I recently applied for my weapons permit, I had been toying around with the idea for a while now and then went ahead and did it. I was informed that it could take up to three months before I receive it, that's a serious background check, if you ask me...
I had to go to the court house to fill out an application and pay some fees, then off I went to the Police station to get my finger-prints taken...fun!!
So where is my buddy Fred, I need help deciding on what piece to get...

Besides, I don't have much love for the NRA these days.
So, your pistola: the easiest type of pistol is a revolver. No fuss, no muss. You won't have to deal with safeties, etc.
That said, revolvers don't have much capacity so the alternative is a semi-automatic.
Whatever the case, you must go to a gun range and rent out a Glock model 17 or 19 AND a .38 or .357 revolver and shoot at least 20 rounds through each (more's better). This will give you a good idea what each is capable of and whether you're drawn to one or the other.
